Steampunk Wall Art – A Collage of Found Objects

The 20″ x 10″ size provides great versatility for placement on a wall.

Steampunk Assemblage Art… in an oft-requested larger size – this time a 20″ x 10″ canvas. My steampunk version of Assemblage Art features the industrial and Victorian aspects of this engrossing science fantasy sub-genre leading to some rather fascinating collages. This time I’m featuring ancient and mythical symbolism with elements such as the Celtic knot, Pegasus, yin and yang, lotus flower, hamsa hand, the sun, the eye, and more if you’re curious. Look closely and you will see approximately 150 embellishments – both vintage and new – as well as dozens of metal beads.

Pegasus, the Eye, and the “Breathe” tag are just a few of the unusual elements.

Assemblage Art on Canvas begins with the background – it’s not just paint. I start with multiple coats and spritzes of paint on stenciled dimensional paste and pieces of crocheted doilies. I then add more spritzes of highlights and finish off with Finnabair’s waxes (which dry to a hard finish). Multiple layers of embellishments are then added to complete this 3D collage to bring it to an overall depth of 2.0″.

Vintage elements include adding machine keys, pearl collar pieces, old bottle glass, metal ornate focal point, beaded necklace, buttons, beads, ancient building (old chess piece), and 1980s jewelry makings.

Newer pieces complete this steampunk look with items such as gears, various beads, bird, brick ties, coins, cabochons, leaves, steampunk heart, buttons, Vitruvian man, wreath berries, clock gears, tree, diamond patterns, hamsa hand, pendants, bracelet sections, eye, “Breathe” word tag, Pegasus, tree trunk, clock round frame, clock face, rabbit, stopwatch case, ancient calendar, sun, metal beads, and various other metal embellishments,

Hangers are attached and, while I prefer the no-frame look, this is ready for framing. This piece will also display nicely on a large table easel.

This original steampunk work of art is 3D assemblage canvas art at its best with a background comprised of multiple coats and spritzes of paint over stenciled textured designs that is then finished off with a metallique wax. Measuring 16″ x 8″, this artwork tells the story of time with four clocks and a sundial sprinkled across the canvas.

I love to include many tiny details in my assemblage artwork – not only adhering dozens of pieces onto the canvas but carefully painting and aging many of those items one by one. This piece includes around 85 embellishments plus dozens of metal beads.

Many of those embellishments are vintage found objects including assorted metal disks, bracelet links, adding machine key, various necklace links, earrings, 1980s jewelry makings, imitation coins, watch face, and a beaded necklace.

Newer elements include a multi-diamond shape, clocks, cabochons, vial, art deco embellishment, bird head, gears, large beads, wings, mortar tie, belt buckle, square metals, chess knight, wings, sundial, buttons, and other various metal embellishments.

A Raven’s Dream

Titled A Raven’s Dream, this little piece of steampunk is my favorite Mini Art piece to date. It’s an original 3D collage measuring 4″ x 4″ x 1.375″. The colors are what draw me most – a mixture of green, turquoise, and purple with spritzes of highlighting color and metallic wax. The background is textured with dimensional paste. Found objects used to form this design include a variety of metal embellishments, a raven, and Dream word charm.

A Spray of Hearts and Roses

This Assemblage Art piece has an especially romantic feel with its spray of hearts and roses spilling down the canvas. Assemblage is the method of creating a larger art piece from smaller objects. Best described as a 3D collage on canvas, it contains numerous “found objects” as well as newer embellishments.

Measuring 8.0″ x 6.0″ x with a depth of 1.50″, the background is textured with stenciled modeling paste and finished off with a number of paints, spritzes, and waxes. A total of 32 embellishments plus 30 brass beads makes this piece perfectly complete.

Older elements (the found objects) include vintage bracelet link, a fragment of pearl purse, button, bead, portion of an antique lace collar, and metal feathers. Newer elements include metal leaves, hearts, fabric roses, buttons, Heritage emblem, filigreed metal stampings, wood half round, and other metal embellishments.

With a whole lot of beauty and a taste of steampunk, this Assemblage Canvas reminds us to “live in the moment”. Measuring 8.0″ by 8.0″ with a depth of 1.50″, the background is textured with stenciled modeling paste and finished off with a number of paints, spritzes, and metallic waxes. Embellishments are then adhered to the canvas to form a three-dimensional design.

You’ll find more than 40 embellishments plus dozens of brass beads in this piece of Assemblage art. Wings Surround Me

The feel of deep blue without being dark – that was the idea lurking in my mind’s eye as I started preparing the background for this unusual taste of steampunk wall art. While steampunk elements can be found throughout the piece, I leaned towards creating a sense of overall beauty rather than the more functional feel of steampunk. Result – a beautiful Steampunk Assemblage Canvas!

I chose to mix deep blue and a lighter blue silver with bronze tones for a foundation textured with stenciled modeling paste, adding highlights of color as I layered elements (found objects) – both vintage and new. The “DISCOVERIES” word charm seemed to be the perfect finishing touch. It measures 14.0” x 11.0” x 1.375”.

This piece contains approximately 200 found objects plus hundreds of smaller and medium beads. Vintage found objects include: toy piece, beads, buttons, numerous jewelry makings, and 3D wood shapes. Original Steampunk Art – Two for One Steampunk Canvases

This original steampunk work of art consists of two canvases that make one piece. On two 11″ x 14″ stretched canvases, overall measurements of the work (when you include a 1″ space between the two canvases) are 23″ wide by 14″ high. It’s 3D assemblage art at its best with a background comprised of multiple coats and spritzes of paint with stenciled textured designs and an overall depth of 1.50″. It is sold as a pair.

It seems that I love tiny details and this pair of assemblage canvases proves that point. When I finished this work, I knew I had included many pieces but was surprised to see it contains over 300 embellishments! I usually try to list the embellishments in my assemblage work but this time, I’ll share the highlights…

Let’s start with the vintage found objects. Behind the central design is facial netting from a woman’s hat circa 1950-60. The clock face is vintage as well as the clock gear and inner workings. Other vintage pieces include a mechanical tool pin, an unknown metal tool piece, adding machine keys, typewriter keys, links from two bracelets, metal beads – large, medium, and small, 12V bulb and socket, another 12V bulb, various plastic jewelry elements, buttons, washers, electric wire, hors d’oeuvres fork, earrings, glass oblong bead, and brooch.

The new charms/embellishments/found objects include metal bird, black bird, glass stones, propeller, wings – both large and small, steampunk bird, winged key, mosaic tiles, flying heart, gears of all types and sizes, stars, paper/fabric roses, branches, bow, hinge and latch set, buttons, large decorative beads, pocket watch form, acorns, bark, quote charm stating “reality has limits, imagination is boundless”, and various metal embellishments.

There are attached hangers for wall hanging. Although most of my Assemblage Art pieces can be framed, I don’t suggest framing this steampunk pair. Embellishments hang over the edges as part of the intricate design.

3D Bird Art

I’m reducing several of my original art pieces. They represent an earlier stage of my work and, although they aren’t the same design as I’m now producing, they remain beautiful wall decor.

With a bird at its center, this Assemblage Art on Canvas actually shows off its assemblage detail at the top and bottom of the piece with dozens of found objects forming arch collages. Measuring 12.0″ by 4.0″ with a depth of 1.25″, the background is textured with stenciled modeling paste and finished off with a number of paints, spritzes, and metallic waxes.

The center bird is showcased in a metal frame surrounded with a beaded garland. The two flowers above and below the framed bird are actually vintage plaster decorative pieces for use in constructing a chandelier. Vintage elements include various jewelry pieces, wooden half round, buttons, beads, and a brass weight. Newer elements include floral cabochons, numerous metal embellishments, and filagreed metal round.

A hanger is attached and, while most of my assemblage art can be framed, this piece has elements that reach slightly beyond the sides of the canvas making it an unlikely candidate for framing. However, I prefer the no-frame look which allows the sides of the canvas to display their color as well.

Hearts and roses set the tone for this elegant Assemblage Art piece. It’s part of my Mini Assemblage Art line as well as my Heart Art line. A perfect gift for a loved one or an adornment for your home, it measures 4.0″ square and not only hangs on its attached hanger but displays nicely on an easel as well. The background is textured with Finnabair’s Art Stones and finished off with a number of paints, waxes, and spritzes.

Nature Shadowbox Collage

It started with the idea of a nature shadowbox and ended up even better with the appearance of a shadowbox using a photo collage frame. Measuring a little over 14″ by 11″ (to allow for material on the sides of the frame), the elements are actually adhered to a canvas which is then overlaid with the collage frame.

Nature was my inspiration and there are many natural items in this piece – the twigs that make the trees, the moss, the pinecones, the Spanish moss used for the girl’s hair, and the piece of branch on which the red bird sits. The bird eggs, lavender, red bird, and butterfly are reproductions. I fashioned the girl’s face from polymer clay and the charm beneath her face declares “life is about creating yourself”. The frame is covered with creepy cloth which I painted to look like a natural material.
