Steampunk Wall Art – A Collage of Found Objects

Steampunk Wall Art – A Collage of Found Objects

The 20″ x 10″ size provides great versatility for placement on a wall.

Steampunk Assemblage Art… in an oft-requested larger size – this time a 20″ x 10″ canvas. My steampunk version of Assemblage Art features the industrial and Victorian aspects of this engrossing science fantasy sub-genre leading to some rather fascinating collages. This time I’m featuring ancient and mythical symbolism with elements such as the Celtic knot, Pegasus, yin and yang, lotus flower, hamsa hand, the sun, the eye, and more if you’re curious. Look closely and you will see approximately 150 embellishments – both vintage and new – as well as dozens of metal beads.

Pegasus, the Eye, and the “Breathe” tag are just a few of the unusual elements.

Assemblage Art on Canvas begins with the background – it’s not just paint. I start with multiple coats and spritzes of paint on stenciled dimensional paste and pieces of crocheted doilies. I then add more spritzes of highlights and finish off with Finnabair’s waxes (which dry to a hard finish). Multiple layers of embellishments are then added to complete this 3D collage to bring it to an overall depth of 2.0″.

Vintage elements include adding machine keys, pearl collar pieces, old bottle glass, metal ornate focal point, beaded necklace, buttons, beads, ancient building (old chess piece), and 1980s jewelry makings.

Newer pieces complete this steampunk look with items such as gears, various beads, bird, brick ties, coins, cabochons, leaves, steampunk heart, buttons, Vitruvian man, wreath berries, clock gears, tree, diamond patterns, hamsa hand, pendants, bracelet sections, eye, “Breathe” word tag, Pegasus, tree trunk, clock round frame, clock face, rabbit, stopwatch case, ancient calendar, sun, metal beads, and various other metal embellishments,

Hangers are attached and, while I prefer the no-frame look, this is ready for framing. This piece will also display nicely on a large table easel.

At the start of this Assemblage creation, I knew two things – the basic color scheme of turquoise, green, and purple (which evolved) and that I wanted a more romantic piece this time around. And then I started building to see where it would go and now find myself in love with the end product! I’m calling it Heart Hill as the focal point brings this piece to 2.0″ in depth which gives this 10.0″ x 8.0″ canvas a highly defined 3D feel with multiple layers of embellishments.

Texture takes a starring role in this Assemblage Canvas piece with a background built first from multiple coats and spritzes of paint and waxes that were then layered with several stencil designs utilizing dimensional paste, burlap, and antique lace.

Just what is Assemblage? It’s the creation of a larger art piece from smaller objects. Best described as a 3D collage on canvas, my assemblage art pieces contain numerous vintage “found objects” as well as newer embellishments. This Assemblage Canvas contains around 75 found objects or newer elements.

Here those vintage found objects include the antique lace, necklace pieces, buttons, 1980s jewelry makings, hanging plastic crystal, porcelain rose, wooden leaf, and papier-mache bead.

Newer elements include patched heart, filigreed metal round and leaf, paper roses, various metal leaves, beads, cabochons, styrofoam ball, bark, decorative beads, metal flower, word charm, metal branches, and wooden round.

Hangers are attached and, while I prefer the no-frame look, this Assemblage Art piece is ready for framing. It will also display nicely on an easel.

Steampunk Assemblage Art… with a touch of Alice in Wonderland. My steampunk version of Assemblage Art features the industrial and Victorian aspects of this engrossing science fantasy sub-genre leading to some rather fascinating collages. This time I’ve added a bit of whimsey with the word tag “Curiouser and Curiouser” from the famous tale. Look closely and you will see approximately 100 embellishments – both vintage and new – as well as dozens of metal beads.

On a 14.0″ x 11.0″ stretched canvas, the depth of this piece is 1.75″. The background has multiple coats and spritzes of paint with stenciled textured designs, hundreds of tiny beads, and rust paste providing additional dimension. Multiple layers of embellishments are then added to complete this 3D collage.

Vintage elements include coin charms, adding machine keys, chess knight bracelet link, bits of two beaded purses, jello mold, 2 types of chain, pill bottle, speaker, lock, various metal mechanisms, buttons, numerous 1980s jewelry makings, bracelet leaves, and beads.

Newer pieces complete this pure steampunk look with items such as gears, clock face, mortar tie, metal flowers, bottle cap, rabbit head, tin heart, winged heart, cabochons, word tag “Curiouser and Curiouser”, watch buckle, gnome face, frame, miniature chess piece, flower face, juggling pin, binoculars, grapes, leaves, bolt head, wood rings, metal bell, wood half round, buttons, and metal beads.

Hangers are attached and, while I prefer the no-frame look, this is ready for framing. This piece will also display nicely on a large table easel.

This 12.0″ x 4.0″ Assemblage Canvas tells us that “Possibility begins with imagination.” And the imagination can run wild with crowned wings, hearts, roses, and even gears for a touch of steampunk. This particular size is especially popular as a unique accent piece for your wall – it’s lovely displayed alone or works beautifully in a wall arrangement.

The depth of this piece is 1.50″. The background is textured with stenciled modeling paste and a length of cheesecloth. A number of paints, spritzes, and waxes were then added before finishing off with 34 embellishments and dozens of tiny beads.

Embellishments include word band, two crowns, winged symbol, leaves of various sizes, two hearts, beads, gears, cabochon, cone, paper/fabric roses, and old hors d’oeuvres forks.

Hangers are attached and, while I prefer the no-frame look, this Assemblage Art piece is ready for framing. It will also display nicely on an easel.

Newer elements include large pendant, turquoise bracelet segment, heart, cabochons, beads, buttons, chess knight, word charm, and various metal embellishments.

Note: The use of descriptive words such as brass and turquoise are just that – I can’t verify that the beads are brass and assume the turquoise is only decorative.

Inspired by the combination of a scrap of an ancient building, I dove into this 3D Assemblage wall art on canvas not really knowing where it would end up. The stunning result has a bit of an ancient feel all over and it’s filled with found objects, both vintage and new. The “REMNANTS” word charm seemed to be the perfect finishing touch.

I chose a blend of light violet and light blue mixed with gray tones for the foundation and then started adding complimentary colors as the layers of elements increased. My Assemblage Art is best described as “original 3D collage on canvas”. It does have a mixed media vibe as well but its many elements place it firmly in the Assemblage category.

Measuring 12.0″ x 9.0″ with a depth of 1.875″, the background is textured with stenciled modeling paste and finished off with a number of paints, spritzes, and metallic waxes.

Vintage found objects include:
Brass flowers and leaves
Chandelier trims
Rectangle metal piece
White bird
Buttons
Jewelry – earrings, beads, and base pieces for building jewelry
Metal leaves
Filigreed and Ivy embellishments
Wood half rounds
Decorative hors d’oeuvres forks
Resin piece of ancient structure

Newer elements include quote charm, metal embellishments, filagreed rounds, beaded bracelet piece, wings, bark, filigreed hearts, flower cabochons, and styrofoam heart.

3D Roses on Canvas

3D Roses on Canvas

All of my Assemblage creations fall into the category of 3D wall art, some more than others, as with this 9″ x 12″ lush 3D flower canvas that measures 2.5″ in depth. It’s rose art at its best with a profusion of roses spilling out of the basket in every direction. And just as with the majority of pieces, it contains numerous found objects – small elements I find at vintage markets or estate sales. The basket holding the roses? It’s actually part of large boy’s toy that reminded me of a pocket envelope.

In my Assemblage canvas art, the background is comprised of multiple layers. Here, I’ve layered stenciled texture paste, gauze, bias tape, mini beads, Battenburg lace, and numerous paints before finishing off with metallic spritzes and waxes.

Vintage found objects include: bead collar, half wood round, chandelier piece, beads, filigreed round, decorative hors d’oeuvres fork, hat netting, metal leaves, buttons, earrings, toy piece, and beaded cones. Newer elements include beaded garland, various metal embellishments, resin leaves, paper/fabric roses, floral cabochons, word charm, filagree rounds, more metal leaves, and metal hearts.

Hangers are attached and, while I prefer the no-frame look, this is ready for framing. This piece will also display nicely on an easel.

3D Bird Art

3D Bird Art

REDUCED – $19.95 – was $39.95

I’m reducing several of my original art pieces. They represent an earlier stage of my work and, although they aren’t the same design as I’m now producing, they remain beautiful wall decor.

With a bird at its center, this Assemblage Art on Canvas actually shows off its assemblage detail at the top and bottom of the piece with dozens of found objects forming arch collages. Measuring 12.0″ by 4.0″ with a depth of 1.25″, the background is textured with stenciled modeling paste and finished off with a number of paints, spritzes, and metallic waxes.

The center bird is showcased in a metal frame surrounded with a beaded garland. The two flowers above and below the framed bird are actually vintage plaster decorative pieces for use in constructing a chandelier. Vintage elements include various jewelry pieces, wooden half round, buttons, beads, and a brass weight. Newer elements include floral cabochons, numerous metal embellishments, and filagreed metal round.

A hanger is attached and, while most of my assemblage art can be framed, this piece has elements that reach slightly beyond the sides of the canvas making it an unlikely candidate for framing. However, I prefer the no-frame look which allows the sides of the canvas to display their color as well.

Reduced – $19.95 was $39.95

Gears of Time

Gears of Time

Named “The Gears of Time”, this little taste of steampunk is part of my Mini Assemblage Art on Canvas line. It’s an original 3D collage measuring 4″ x 4″ x .625″. The black gesso background is textured with dimensional paste. Found objects used to form this design include a metal clock face, metal gears and rounds, eagle’s head, leaf, and a decorative vintage hors d’oeuvres fork.

Dimensions: 4″ x 4″ x .625″

There is an attached hanger and, although I prefer the no-frame look, The Gears of Time is ready for framing. I occasionally frame an assemblage piece and the effect is stunning. This piece will also display nicely on an easel.

And We’re Back!

And We’re Back!

Vacationing for a week in the Bahamas was so entirely restful and we could never tire of that turquoise ocean off the back deck. But coming home after vacation always has its advantages – we simply love returning to our regular routine. We’re fortunate to have a life we enjoy to the max every day – not just on vacation.

Of course, my mind couldn’t stay still while we were away when it comes to all things art. I’m now carrying around new designs in my head as well as new topics for blogging. But as is usual for an overactive mind, how do I now choose what to do first?

– Continue with those two gourds that are sitting at my gourd station at this moment.

– Finish up the two custom assemblage canvases at my assemblage station. (This will actually be first.)

– Keep learning about SEO – search engine optimization – a never ending daily job to keep Etsy, Google, and Amazon featuring your work in their searches

– There’s a new Assemblage Canvas to list – this time a collage

– There are more than two dozen Found Objects photographed and ready to list at Etsy

– I’m expanding my Assemblage Art line in several directions but still contemplating which one to feature first – spirit dolls on canvas or hanging assemblage art or assemblage jewelry or even the more typical standing assemblage art. Designs and beginnings of each line are seen throughout my art studio.

Abyssimo – this is just a small piece of one of her larger works

– And then there’s this… something I’m very excited to learn. I splurged and purchased two Abyssimo tutorials right before Christmas. This artist is simply the best around for creating 3D texture on canvas. It represents hours of instruction and I keep thinking I’ll block off time to dedicate solely to learning her marvelous techniques. I’ve now given up on that “block of time” idea and believe that I just need to start learning in bits and pieces! Her actual name is Maria Grossbaum-Fondler and you can see here a taste of her work. If you click on the image, it will take you to a short YouTube video where she introduces you to her methods.

– Of course, Gourd Art is an important aspect of my artwork as well. Although I can produce finished gourds for selling, there is still so much more to learn that requires practice and more practice.

So, lots of fun and inspiration is now waiting for me no matter which way I turn!
